The remaining sentence of Nasim Soltanbeigi, an Iranian journalist, was included under the “General Pardon and Sentence Reduction Directive of 2025” following confirmation by the Forensic Medical Commission. Soltanbeigi had previously been released from prison with a suspension of her sentence.
Maryam Kianersi, Soltanbeigi’s lawyer, announced on September 20, 2025, via a tweet on her account: “The remaining prison sentence of my client, Nasim Soltanbeigi, has been pardoned under the 2025 standard pardon, based on the Forensic Medical Commission’s file and its confirmation.”
Soltanbeigi was released from Evin Prison on March 9, 2024, after serving three months and 20 days, with her sentence suspended to pursue treatment for her medical condition. The case was initiated due to her arrest during the 2022 protests.
On October 2022, Soltanbeigi was arrested by Tehran’s IRGC intelligence agents at Imam Khomeini International Airport and transferred to Ward 2-A of Evin Prison. After 47 days in temporary detention, she was released on February 6, 2023 upon posting a one-billion-toman bail.
In August 2023, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, sentenced Soltanbeigi to seven months and 16 days in prison for “propaganda against the system” under Article 500 of the Islamic Penal Code, and three years and six months for “assembly and collusion to act against national security” under Article 610. She was also subjected to additional penalties, including a two-year ban on membership in political and social groups and a two-year travel ban. The verdict was upheld by Branch 36 of the Tehran Appeals Court in September 2023.
