Soltan-Ali Abedi Arrested to Serve Prison Sentence

“Soltan-Ali Abedi,” a iranian journalist and editor of the news site “Diyar-e Ayar,” was arrested after reporting to the Third Criminal Execution Branch in Zahedan.

This journalist was arrested on Monday, December 4, 2023, following a summons to the Criminal Execution Branch in Zahedan, and was transferred to Zahedan Prison to serve a one-year sentence. Mr. Abedi’s one-year prison sentence had previously been upheld by the Seventh Branch of the Zahedan Court of Appeals.

The International Federation of Journalists has reported that this sentence was issued following a complaint by a representative of the Inspection Organization in Chabahar, accusing Soltan-Ali Abedi of “spreading falsehoods”; a conviction attributed to the publication of a report by this journalist regarding corruption in the Zahedan municipality.

Earlier this November, Farshid Abedi, the director of the Diyar-e Ayar news site, also reported being summoned to the prosecutor’s office and informed of charges against him. Mr. Abedi was accused in the Fourth Branch of the Zahedan Prosecution of “spreading falsehoods” and “disturbing public opinion,” charges that emerged following a complaint from the Martyrs and Veterans Affairs Foundation due to the publication of a report on the Diyar-e Ayar news site.
