Iranian Journalist Mustafa Nemati Released from Prison

Mustafa Nemati, an Iranian journalist, was released from prison after serving a total of 211 days. He was arrested on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, and transferred to Evin Prison to serve his sentence.

Mustafa Nemati, a Tehran-based journalist and economic analyst, has previously collaborated with Donya-e-Eqtesad newspaper and Tejarat-e-Farda magazine. On May 19, 2024, he was detained by security forces and taken to Evin Prison. After spending three weeks in temporary detention, he was released on bail set at 7 billion tomans.

On July 20, 2024, a court sentenced Nemati to a total of five years and four months in prison and a fine of 15 million tomans. He was convicted on charges of “propaganda against the state,” receiving an eight-month sentence, “spreading false information,” resulting in a one-year-and-four-month sentence and a 15-million-toman fine, and “insulting sanctities,” which carried a three-year-and-four-month sentence.

Under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, 40 months of his prison sentence were enforceable. The court cited tweets published by Nemati as evidence for the charges against him.
