Iranian journalist jina Modarres Gorji released from prison

Jina Modares Gorji, a women’s rights activist and journalist imprisoned in Sanandaj, Iran, was released from prison after completing her sentence.

On Monday, 22 September 2025, Jina Modares Gorji was freed from Sanandaj Prison after serving 325 days of her sentence. She had previously spent approximately four months in temporary detention. Including the time in temporary detention, Jina Modares Gorji endured a total of 16 months of imprisonment before her release.

On 2 November 2024, Jina Modares Gorji was arrested after appearing at the Sanandaj Criminal Sentences Enforcement Branch and was transferred to Sanandaj Prison to serve a 16-month sentence. Previously, Branch 4 of the Kurdistan Province Court of Appeals had sentenced her to 16 months in prison for “forming and managing an illegal group” and one year in prison for “propaganda against the system”. Under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the executable portion of her sentence was one year and four months.

Jina Modares Gorji, who has a history of working with Etemad, Shahrvand, and Kurdish publications, was first arrested on 21 September 2022 during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests by intelligence agents in a Sanandaj street with violence. She was released after 42 days of temporary detention on a 100 million toman bail, which was later increased to one billion toman following new charges.

She was arrested for the second time on 10 April 2023 by security forces, spent about one month in solitary confinement, and was released after 84 days of temporary detention upon posting a five billion toman bail.
