Simultaneously with the continuation of a new round of negotiations between Iran and the USA, the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against two media executives for making critical remarks about these negotiations.
Mizan, the official news agency of the Judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran, reported on April 19, 2025, that “some vulgar remarks made on social media by the managers of two media outlets led to the filing of charges against these individuals. These remarks were made in recent days and resulted in legal action against them.”
Mizan did not name the media activists against whom the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges. However, the Fars News Agency, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, identified these two media activists as Mostafa Faghihi, the managing director of the “Entekhab” website, and Sajjad Abedi, the manager of the Telegram channel “Political and Social Sarcasm.”
The filing of charges by the Prosecutor’s Office against media outlets, media activists, and journalists is a recurring pattern for suppressing freedom of expression in Iran; a pattern that intensifies following controversial events in the country.
