Mission of the Special Rapporteur and Fact-Finding Committee on Iran Extended

The United Nations Human Rights Council has approved the mission of “Maya Sato,” the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, and the fact-finding committee of this organization for another year.

The resolution of the UN Human Rights Council, which took place on April 3, 2025 in Geneva with the aim of reviewing human rights violations in Iran, was adopted with 24 votes in favor, 8 against, and 15 abstentions.

In this resolution, the Council condemned the “systematic violation of human rights in Iran” and called on the Islamic Republic to end the crisis of impunity for perpetrators of crimes and to ensure full cooperation with the Special Rapporteur and the independent fact-finding mission of the UN to investigate human rights violations in Iran.

Simultaneously with the approval of the continuation of the Special Rapporteur’s reporting on the human rights situation in Iran, the UN Human Rights Council approved the expansion of the documentation of human rights violations by the UN fact-finding mission. In the past two years, the fact-finding mission has focused on documenting cases related to the “Women, Life, Freedom” protests in 2022 in Iran.
