In the same case, the newspaper Etemad has also been suspended for two months and barred from continuing its activities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mizan, the media outlet of Iran\u2019s judiciary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deffi.org\/%d8%b1%d9%88%d8%b2%d9%86%d8%a7%d9%85%d9%87-%d8%a7%d8%b9%d8%aa%d9%85%d8%a7%d8%af-%d8%a8%d9%87-%d9%85%d8%af%d8%aa-%d8%af%d9%88-%d9%85%d8%a7%d9%87-%d8%aa%d9%88%d9%82%db%8c%d9%81-%d9%88-%d8%b9%d8%a8%d8%a7\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.deffi.org\/%d8%b1%d9%88%d8%b2%d9%86%d8%a7%d9%85%d9%87-%d8%a7%d8%b9%d8%aa%d9%85%d8%a7%d8%af-%d8%a8%d9%87-%d9%85%d8%af%d8%aa-%d8%af%d9%88-%d9%85%d8%a7%d9%87-%d8%aa%d9%88%d9%82%db%8c%d9%81-%d9%88-%d8%b9%d8%a8%d8%a7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> that Abbas Abdi has been sentenced to one year in prison and that the newspaper Etemad has been suspended for two months. According to the report, the ruling is not final. Because Abbas Abdi and the newspaper Etemad have filed appeals, the case has been referred to the Supreme Court for a final decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, Abbas Abdi has been charged with \u201ccreating discord among different segments of society\u201d and \u201cpublishing falsehoods and untrue material\u201d (under paragraphs 4 and 11 of Article 6 of the Press Law and Article 698 of the Penal Code on Ta\u2019zirat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, the Tehran Prosecutor\u2019s Office had filed a complaint against the journalist and the media outlet following the publication of an op-ed by Abbas Abdi in Etemad. In that article, Abdi had referred to a portion of citizens who take part in nighttime gatherings in support of the Islamic Republic as a \u201crentier minority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complaint against Abbas Abdi and Etemad was filed amid the continued internet shutdown in Iran and an unprecedented wave of repression against free information dissemination in the country. This wave of repression began after the outbreak of war between Iran and the Israel-U.S. coalition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After 88 days -marking the longest deliberate nationwide internet blackout in the world- the Iranian government partially restored internet access. Nevertheless, widespread disruptions and severe filtering continue in the country.
