{"id":3275,"date":"2025-05-13T19:24:04","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T19:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.deffi.org\/en\/?p=3275"},"modified":"2025-05-13T19:24:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T19:24:31","slug":"iranian-journalist-parviz-yari-faces-unlawful-charges-in-politicized-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deffi.org\/en\/iranian-journalist-parviz-yari-faces-unlawful-charges-in-politicized-case\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian Journalist Parviz Yari Faces Unlawful Charges in Politicized Case"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Following a complaint from the IRGC Intelligence Organization, the Judiciary of the Islamic Republic of iran has initiated a case with serious charges against Parviz Yari, a journalist and senior researcher at the Defending Free Flow Of Information Organization (DeFFI).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The First Branch of the Zanjan Revolutionary Court has accused the organization\u2019s researcher of at least three charges, based on articles of the Islamic Penal Code: under Article 498 for \u201cforming an illegal organization and conspiring to disrupt national security,\u201d under Article 508 for \u201ccollaborating with hostile states,\u201d and under Article 500 for \u201cpropaganda against the system.\u201d These ambiguous and severe accusations could lead to a potential prison sentence of over 20 years, according to the presiding judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This case, initiated following the IRGC Intelligence Organization\u2019s complaint against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deffi.org\/%d9%be%d8%b1%d9%88%d9%86%d8%af%d9%87%d8%b3%d8%a7%d8%b2%db%8c-%d8%a7%d8%b7%d9%84%d8%a7%d8%b9%d8%a7%d8%aa-%d8%b3%d9%be%d8%a7%d9%87-%d8%b9%d9%84%db%8c%d9%87-%d9%be%d8%b1%d9%88%db%8c%d8%b2-%db%8c\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.deffi.org\/%d9%be%d8%b1%d9%88%d9%86%d8%af%d9%87%d8%b3%d8%a7%d8%b2%db%8c-%d8%a7%d8%b7%d9%84%d8%a7%d8%b9%d8%a7%d8%aa-%d8%b3%d9%be%d8%a7%d9%87-%d8%b9%d9%84%db%8c%d9%87-%d9%be%d8%b1%d9%88%db%8c%d8%b2-%db%8c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parviz Yari<\/a>, involves multiple violations of the researcher\u2019s rights. Despite over two months of legal proceedings at the prosecutor\u2019s office, no summons have been issued to Yari. Moreover, even after the case\u2019s transfer to the First Branch of Zanjan Revolutionary Court, repeated visits by Yari\u2019s legal representative have failed to grant access to the case files, preventing proper defense preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This obvious politicized case, conducted in an opaque manner and without adhering to fair trial standards, is not the first action by the IRGC and the judiciary against DeFFI and its researcher. Yari is among many Iranian journalists who have previously faced fabricated charges, harassment, and threats from security agencies of the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DeFFI expresses its support for Yari and considers the case against him as a manifestation of the systematic efforts by the Islamic Republic to silence journalists and obstruct independent information dissemination.
